Try looking at the 3G instead. The price point must be similar for the 2001 and 2002 models. The 3rd Generation gets many good reviews. I have a 2001 Spyder and love it.
It is not always the model of car, more often it is the people you do business with that makes the difference between well kept cars and junk on wheels.

I owned a 98 GST for about 3 years. It never gave me not one problem. It drove up to 130k miles before I sold it. The only thing I would complain about is the paint job. It started to look really nasty with time. I don't know if it because I live in TX and the constant being out in the sun ruined it. But everyone did tell me how crappy it was and would question my motives on buying it. I will tell you that I had no problem selling it, and I got stuck with a 03 Accord that has given me so many problems, I wish I wouldn't have sold my Eclipse. I have put so much money on this Accord in just repairs. And it only has 57k miles. So that is what happens when you listen to others.

I don't know about a 98. I had a 90 I bought new and had it for about 10 years. It was a good car. In the last five, years that I owned it, the computer quit once and I had smoke coming into the interior. Luckily only smoke and not fire. Gradually with time the risers got worse to the point of a loud tapping noise in the engine. However, the engine was reliable. I think most cars have this problem with age. Anyway, I drove it until about 120,000 miles.

the 98's are the second generation i believe, and while they are in fast and the furious and everyone who is under 18/dumb ppl love them, but they are really shitty cars...you can slap a turbo on anything and make it go fast, however the actual test is how long that car will hold up after you put the turbo on...the 2nd gen's were horrible bc they didnt hold up, most of them had problems with their synchronizers(manual) and or transmissions(auto & manual) and also there are just way too many things that tend to go wrong with them, a few of my friends have always knocked on me about my civic, but im still driving mine and they are rebuilding their engines for the third time...or fixing something else, and the best thing is, my car is still faster.

Absolute mechanical nightmares.
The RS and GS trim levels have a terrible engine (420A) and transmission that were built by Chrysler and the GS-T and GSX can suffer from crankwalk (4G63).
I had a 99 10th Anniversary GS and I had one problem after another with it. I took excellent car of the car too, but the quality of those cars is extremely poor.
Listen to your family.
