What would you udnerstand from this e-mail dialogue with your student:

Student - May a student ask everything to her instructor?
Professor - Sounds like a philosophical question. But ask away..
Student- Are you for any reason smiling when you are reading this and my other e-mails?

Professors... truly a class of people without a clue about real life....

From the dialogue, I would guess that the student was trying to flirt with the professor. Flirting or not, the student is wasting the professor's time unless they actually have a question of importance to the material being studied.

The professor should have answered, "A student can ask their professor anything related to their academics and field of study." If I were a professor, I'd respond to the last statement with, "All smiling aside, our course of study is the only topic on the table for discussion. Let me know if there is anything you need clarification on in terms of the subject matter."

Oh, geez, what a lame attempt by the student to flirt with the professor!

I sure hope the professor is professional enough to address the issue with enough sensitivity to not upset the student too greatly but with enough firmness to establish appropriate boundaries and make it clear to the student that such behavior is not going to be tolerated.

Sounds a bit like entrapment; if I were the professor I wouldn't read any more emails from this student and I would drop her from my section. My job would be too important to risk on something like this.

That the student is trying to "hit on" the professor, or that they are trying to be kiss ups to get a good grade.

I would like that the student had a slighly sick mind

or if i knew the student and that wasnt the case then i would like he (the student) was checking to see how I was doing.

Sounds to me like the student's silly attempt at flirting.

I would think the student was more interested in swapping emails with me than in asking a valid question.
