I'm currently writing a song, and in this one measure i have in this order:

dotted quarter note
eighth note
quarter noter (staccato)
dotted eighth note

the rest of the song is written in 4/4 but i just cannot figure out what time signature this measure is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you've got the equivalent of 7&1/2 8th notes (or 15/16ths).

dotted quarter = 3/8 (6/16)
eighth = 1/8 (2/16)
quarter = 2/8 (4/16)
dotted 8th = 1&1/2 /8 (3/16)

What you've REALLY got is: ... a mess!

Maybe it's TIME to go back to the drawing board (sorry, couldn't resist that!) :-)

u can actually use a 15/16 time signature, it will confuse the crap out of anyone, but it works to make the measure complete
