The scariest movie I ever saw was like in the 80's, it was called Hell-raiser. There was this one scene where this guy gets torn apart by these chains with fishhooks attached at the end.

I was terrified when went fishing for a long time after that.

The newer horror movies seem more cerebral, and it's apples and oranges comparison.

1) Scariest old movie - Black Christmas. A young girl, I think in a sorority, gets these pervy calls from a stranger, and everyone ends up getting murdered.

2) Hostel - Disgusting, cruel & gory as hell. It's more so scary because it looks into the depths of human evil & cruelty, more so than all this monster and boogy man crap. Lots of torture scenes.

3) Hostel. It's just sick.

1)The Shining

2)The Descent

3)The Shining... no movie has frightened me as much as that one did. Modern movies have lost the art of pure cerebral terror and instead go for cheap schocks and scares (eg all the crap like The Grudge, Pulse, etc. These movies SUCK!)

The Descent came close to recapturing the kind of claustrophobic atmosphere that is lacking in movies now. But the Shining is still the winner.
