I was backpacking on the Laurel Highland Trail with my friend Kim from Australia. We had seen a young black bear earlier in the day. We were hiking at night now and heard a horrific crash (like a falling tree) followed by a loud groan and then heavy steps of a running animal coming our way. I remembered my Dad telling me, "If you're ever attacked by a bear, you only have to outrun one person." There was only one other person there, so I told Kim it was a woodpecker flapping it's wings." When she turned toward the sound with a questionable look, I took off as fast as I could. Fortunately, it was just a young bear who had scared himself knocking down a tree and he stopped running moments later. Kim wasn't too angry with me.
