I think your teacher is being very judgmental really-I can't speak for others but I use mine for the right purposes and somedays I don't use it at all. I use it to keep in contact with family members at home and abroad.

I hate my cell phone but need it for business. If I didn't need one for work, I wouldn't have one.

But, your history teacher sounds like a sad and lonely individual. Probably had a cell phone but never got a call, so got rid of it. That or as a teacher, is probably too poor to own one and is just envious of everyone else who has one.
