They come from the store.
Before that, they come from goldfish breeders. Sometimes people use them as bait on fish hooks (they work really well as bait since they're live and shiny), but then the goldfish sometimes get off the hook (literally) and start breeding in the lake. This is a bad thing, as they're insanely dirty fish and breed at a high rate. When this happens it totally screws up the local ecosystem. That's the only time you'll find "Wild" goldfish.

goldfish orginated from Crap in Asia, mainly China, so you can't really "catch" them, not in America, and i don't think they let people catch gold fishes in China either. I have seen Gold fish/carp/koi? that is over 2 ft long, and the black kinds are 4 ft long in China(they live in a 33 by 50 by 10 deep feet pond, and the water is from moutain spring, theya re fed pumkpings and mellons and other stuff)

goldfish came and still come from Japan and China, you can sometimes catch them in the wild here in USA where someone has dumped a fish they no longer want, lots of people use them as bait just like minnows and sometimes they get away, and yes there are several large goldfish farms here in USA, especially a
giant one in Arkansas and more in Florida

I have a pond full. They lay eggs in vegetation or gravel and hatch camoflage brown then turn orange later. I get too many and gave some away that were about 8" long. I had koi, but we had a 104 deg day and they died because the circulating pump broke. If you have too many the big ones eat the eggs. You are not supposed to use them for bait because they may get free and take over

It's basically a domesticated breed of carp. You're as likely to catch one in a lake as you are to trap a free range Chiahuahua.
