that when I am know the answer but don't know how to answer the way his teacher wants it answered... Short of reading the entire text book.. Does any one else have problems doing this. converting inches to yards in fractions.. 15 inches to yards fractions?... it is 5/12 right.. how do I get there? 3 is a factor but I don't know why or how. 36 inches in a yard
so 1 inch is 1/36 of a yard
2 inches is 2/36 of a yard and so on.

I don't know what his teacher is expecting, but you can do it this way:

15 inches * ( 1 yard / 36 inches ) = 15/36 yards.

Then, factor the numerator and the denominator, and you have
3*5 / ( 2*2*3*3).
Cancel out any factors that appear both above and below. In this case, the 3 in the numerator goes, as does one of the 3's in the denominator.

You're left with 5 / (2*2*3) = 5/12 yards.

15/36 (yards are 12 inches per feet times 3 feet equaling 36
15/36 reduces to 5/12, yes. because 3*5=15 and 3*12=36
