this usually is the blower motor resistor for the fan.it makes it go from 1..2..3..and high
when they go bad the only speed you get is high, because there is no resistance to the motor.it is found on the round canister that houses the blower motor itself,it has two screws holding it in.when you remove it it will look like some springs attached to a flat piece of plastic.they are usually 20-30 dollars at a local parts house.

You didn't state the year, make, and model of your vehicle, but it sounds like William K is the only correct respondent. When you select the lower fan speed settings, electrical current has to pass through a resistor, in order to enable varying the current to the blower motor, and consequently the speed of the blower motor. On the high setting, the resistor is bypassed, the supplying the full 12 volts. As William K mentioned, it probably isn't expensive to buy the replacement part. I would like to add that on some vehicles, you may need to have a new connector spliced to the new resistor as well. Hope this helps.

Need to check with parts store for location In my Dodge the resistors are behind the glove copartment. In the Chrysler its under the dash. Sounds like the problem, I had it happen twice.
Should get a Chiltons manual and be sure.

Nothing wrong with the A\C or the heater. Its the switch. Go to a local srcap yard and see if they have one there. The dealer will charge you a mint.
