Obviously that little snipet of information reveals more in what it does not tell. It does not tell us about what type of a god it is that seems so eager to destroy His subjects. It makes us wonder how in antediluvian times a god gets so actively involved in mankind's affairs that He effaces man so easily but in the time of historical man seems to have vacated the universe or at least restrained his temper tantrums. It also makes us question the goodness of a God that feels compelled to destroy entire populations without considering the innocent beings that would perish as a consequence. It is also interesting to see how by seeking his subjects ablution in destruction for sexual pecadillos why then did he not create a new species that were not subject to sexual urges and other appetites that would obviously make them lower creatures than what he wanted. Did he make a mistake in forming men to act as they do and if He believed so then why did he not destroy all of them and begin with a different species entirely. Enlightenment comes from realizing that God did not create man but that man created God and that the verses of the Bible were mens' biggoted attempts at controling human behavior to make it exactly as they wanted it to be. In later times, when people began to assess that the God of the Old Testament was too draconian and fierce a kinder and gentler God was devised from the life of a man, Jesus. Jesus may have existed. He may have been an admirable person but myth and stories derived from his brief existence on the planet that have become immortal.

city of Sodom was destroyed for the same reason God Flooded the earth during Noah's time, and the same reason God made Moses wonder in the wilderness for 40 years, Idol worship, false god worship. Which is common with all of these punishments.

The current day church says that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of homosexuality. This is not true.
At that time if two armies meet, the winners were allowed to humiliate the losing army or enemy. one way they would humiliate the loser was sodomize them. THis is also found in Islamic war history. THis is not homosexuality and in current times is not translated corrected or misinterpreted.

To give further information there is no word in Hebrew or Greek that translated to Sodomite.

In the Bible, the two cities were seen to be evil and if two good men could be found by two angels sent by God, he would spare the cities. There wasn't, so God destroyed everyone and everything in the two cities. Not even the childeren.
It's hard to draw a parallel in today's world, because we realise that not everyone in two entire cities can be totally evil.

From the good folks at wikipedia

In Genesis 18, God informs Abraham that He plans to destroy the city of Sodom because of its gross immorality. Abraham pleads with God not to destroy Sodom, and God agrees that He would not destroy the city if there were 50 righteous people in it, then 45, then 30, then 20, or even 10 righteous people. The Lord's two angels only found one righteous person living in Sodom, Abraham's nephew Lot. Consequently, God follows through with His plans to destroy the city.
In Genesis 19:4-5, the final episode in the story of Sodom is described as the angels visit Lot to warn him to flee:
4. When they had not yet retired, and the people of the city, the people of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, the entire populace from every end[of the city].
5. And they called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, and let us be intimate with them." (Judaica Press)
Lot refused to give the visiting angels to the men of Sodom and instead offered them his two daughters. The men refused to accept this compromise. The men were struck with blindness, allowing Lot and his family, who were then instructed to leave the city, to escape, and Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed with fire and brimstone by God.
A similar event is recorded in the Judges 19:20-22, this time involving the town of Gibeah. This suggests that the occurrences in Sodom were not unique:
20. And the old man said, "Peace be to you, just let all your needs be upon me, but do not lodge in the street."
21. And he brought him into his house, and gave fodder to the donkeys, and they washed their feet, ate and drank.
22. As they were enjoying themselves, and behold, the men of the city, men of wickedness, surrounded the house, (and were) beating at the door. And they spoke to the man, the elderly master of the house, saying, "Bring out the man that came into your house, so that we may be intimate with him. (Judaica Press)

There are parallels. People are unrepentant; godless; mock all that's holy; have false belief systems that exclude the true God.

For several answers, see the links below:

According to the Biblical account, only Lot and his family were spared (and Lot's wife turned back for a look and was turned into a pillar of salt)

But you might want to take that story with a grain of salt.

Ever hear of the word Sodomy? That's where it came from and to hear the talk on this forum, I'd say the world today is working on being the same.

Well, it wasn't simply because of gay people. it was because of immoral behavior was epidemic in those cities, regardless of sexual orientation. Sexulal orientation was irrelevant, the lewdness was.
