I am trying to fundraise for an individual. I'm thinking about putting cans beside cash registers in local stores. I need to know what the legal rules are for this. I know I need permission from the stores, but do I need to have a license?

I do not believe you need a liscense, you may want to check to make sure whatever money you raise does not get taxed. There is a certin code of ethics for fundraisers (site below) and they may have more of the legal issues for you.

I believe so... I think it needs to be a non-profit organization or just towards a good cause. I remember raising money for teens who were pregnant who needed assistance. You are not selling anything so i dont think you need a license. just the permission of stores. And if you have littl cute kids then, you will raise alot of money . ppl always donate something if you have a child there. Just post up outside of like a kroger... You'll be surprized how much people will help out. good luck.

Of course there are legal issues with respect to fundraising... And by the tone of your question, I'd venture to say that they are far more complicated than you are presently capable of understanding.

I'd suggest you consult an attorney, if you can not afford one, or are simply too lazy to do so, DON"T put any cans in stores unless you want to eventually be under investigation.

It's goverend by State laws, words like non-profit organization are used with them. Just be sure to use a bank account opened just for this Fund. And record all donations and report all interest. Contact the IRS for tax considerations.
