The South seceded and Lincoln wanted to preserve the Union. He would have permitted slavery if that was what It would take to preserve the Union, but the war started and was going badly. All the North had to do was let the South go, but he wanted to preserve the Union, so to keep the North in the war, he used slavery to turn it into a moral crusade.

The cause of the civil war was the south getting pissed over not having enough rights and representation over issues such as slavery, but slavery was not the reason the war was fought. Ask people from the south, and it was more a war of northern aggression.

if ur talking about the American Civil War 1861 - 1865, the main cause was that the north under the rule of Abraham Licoln did not want slavery, they wanted mechanisation, etc. while the south under the rule of Jefferson Davis wanted slavery. In the end in 1865, the north wins and the emancipation of slaves takes place.

hope this helps

Slavery, States Right's, Missouri Compromise being broken. There were many reasons. I thinks States Right's is the main answer.
