All the North had to do was let the South go, but he wanted to preserve the Union, so to keep the North in the war, he used slavery to turn it into a moral crusade.

if ur talking about the American Civil War 1861 - 1865, the main cause was that the north under the rule of Abraham Licoln did not want slavery, they wanted mechanisation, etc. while the south under the rule of Jefferson Davis wanted slavery. In the end in 1865, the north wins and the emancipation of slaves takes place.
