the pumpkins that i buy last a pretty long time (about a wek and a half) so i dont know any other persevatives for that. my aunt tried the vasoline and when she stuck the little candle inside it started to spark and the pumkin caught on fire.

When you seal something organic that has a lot of moisture in it, it starts to mold and rot under whatever kind of sealant you put on it. That would go for vaseline too.

Nothing you can do will keep the pumpkin forever. After carving, if you keep it refrigerated, it should be fine for a couple of weeks. Maybe refigerating AND putting vaseline on it, together, wouldn't hurt it.

Just make sure you put a pan under it, on the fridge shelf, in case it seeps.

On Extreme Pumpkins.Com the guy says to coat the pumpkin with WD40 to make it last a little longer. This sounds a little dangerous to me, but the guy swears by it and he seems to know what he's talking about...

It says that in most pumpkin-carving pattern books. It also suggests putting saran wrap over it and putting it in your fridge when it's not on display.

never heard of it. to keep it fresh, don't put it where the sun can get it and don't buy it and carve it more than a week in advance.
