I feel that affirmative action was a noble attempt to make up for past discriminatory policies against marginalized groups, but what makes African and Hispanic Americans more deserving than others?

Asians have had history full of discrimination in the US too, for example the Japanese interment during WWII and People v. Hall, which stated that Asians could not testify court. The Irish also had a tough time when the first came to the US, just think “Paddy Wagon.” Using the same argument to maintain affirmative action, shouldn’t Asians and Irish be given an equal boost too?

Would it not be more appropriate to establish a color blind quota for university admissions based on family income?

According to a Princeton study (http://opr.princeton.edu/faculty/tje/espenshadessqptii.pdf, pp, 303-304) If affirmative action policies were abolished, Black and Hispanic acceptance rates would fall by “one-half to two-thirds,” Whites would gain “0.5 percentage points” and Asians would “rise by one-third.”

There is no reason for affirmation action in 2006. Plenly of minorities have made it in the past 50 years, many just needed a chance. We have wonderful minority doctors, lawyers, a Secretary of Defence, a Surgeon General (oops), administrators, representatives. The list goes on and on.

The opportunities have been there. If they did not/donot/ willnot make the effort to free themselves no one will ever be able to do it for them.,

The is true for both black, white and brown. It's not your color that holds you back but your preference of feeling a victim and blaming others for your deficiencies.

Because currently blacks and hispanics currently have a lower college attendance rate than whites and asians. Assuming these groups have the same intelligence (which they do) one can only come to the conclusion that they do not have the same economic footing that the others do, thus affirmative action.

I agree. Affirmative action is a program that has outlived its usefulness. It is now a program designed to discriminate and should be abolished.

Cannot. Just about all the government jobs have been filled with minority leaving little chance for regular citizens.
