It will start the day you say things will get better. I myself have been victim to great losses due to several natural disasters. It seems it is very normal to me to piece my life back together with the hope it will be better in the future. It's up to you what time normal begins my friend.

I once lived in a place that was almost removed from the map one night when tornadoes came through. It's not quite as bad as Katrina, but...

There is no "getting back" to normal. There is only a "new normal." The storm will always be with you. Everything will be either "before the storm" or "after the storm," kinda like "AD and "BC". Some people will get back to where they were economically, some will make out like bandits, and others will never recover.

Emotionally, you'll always have gut-level feelings every time the sky gets black, or every time NOAA announces that it's hurricane season.

The good news is that the "new normal" can be as good as life before the storm. It will be different, but it can be a good life.

Depends on the person. Some will wallow in self-pity, enjoying the role of "victim." Others will accept that bad things happen and look forward to 'bigger and better.'

For some of us who live in New Orleans, it has still not begun yet, because of federal, state, and local bureaucracy.
