It depends what pill it is. microgynon works straight away but u take it on the 1st day of your period so u wont want to have sex then anyway. The pill is most effective form of birth control but it wont protect u against std's. it has to be taken every day and if you miss a pill you have to use extra contraception for a week afterwards (7 days) it is also classed as missing a pill if you throw up or have an upset stomach.

You have to read the package insert.

I know that Ortho TriCyclen Lo is effective after the first week IF it's taken correctly.

But other pills I've taken have said that you need to use a backup method for the whole first cycle.

I don't believe that there is a single brand of pill that's only effective after three cycles; that's nonsense. And no birth control pills are effective immediately, either.

And, yes, some people do become pregnant while on the pill, but most of the time that's not a pharmaceutical problem but user error instead.

If you take it correctly (i.e. according to the package instructions, every day, and at the same time every day), and you pay attention to situations which require a backup method (such as when you're taking antibiotics), then the pill is 99% effective.

I don't know what "it works only if your body accepts it" means. Certainly no doctor has every told ME that. Sounds like you or your girlfriend or both could use a counseling session from a medical provider about the risks and benefits of the pill?

Most contraceptive pills are about 97% effective and work pretty much right away, but there are different types of pills with different hormone ratios, so this could vary. They work regardless of whether you're healthy or ill, unless you're throwing up right after taking it so that the hormones in the pill never get a chance to be absorbed by the body. There's nothing to accept or not accept on the body's part.

My pill (Dianette, which I actually use to control polycystic ovary syndrome and acne rosacea, as well as for contraception) says that if you take the first one on the first day of your period, it claims that you will be protected straight away, but if you miss one, you will have to use another method of contraception, such as condoms etc., so I would be safe and give the pill about a week to come effective.

If you have a stomach upset, or if you are sick, the pill might not be as effective, as it is being forced out of the system. Antibiotics will also negate the effects of the pill, so if you are on antibiotics you will have to use additional contraception

Wait 7 days to let it get into your system. if you miss a pill, start taking the rest as usual but use other contraception for 7 days. If you take a pill and vomit soon after, then it's likely the pill will come back up, so take other precautions. Same if you have a runny bum! Your doc will have all the information leaflets on this.

When you first start taking the pill wait a month at least for it to work. It is very effective for most women but on occasions it can fail.
Long term use could cause health problems especially if you smoke.

I was on the pill for around 15 years (on and off) between children, and found it the most reliable form of contraception.
Just remember to take it everyday

its usually stright away but the pill is only like 97 or 98% accurate so u should still wear a condom if u miss one day of the pill u should wear a condom for the first seven days and then u should start taking it again. If you wanna find out about it u should go to your local treetwise clinic they'll explain everything to u

Be careful! No contraception is a 100% safe. You can have sexual intercourse after 7days of using the pill. Honestly speaking, i would always use a condom as well. I know a handful of people who have got pregnant on the pill ( including myself) It really isn't worth the risk.

You can have sex after taking the pill but the pill will only be effective for the sex you had before the pill.

Hi, it is 99% effective but you need to take seven pills (seven days) from your first packet before having unprotected intercourse. Remember it doesn't protect you from sexually transmitted diseases, just pregnancy.
If you are sick i.e sickness or diareah then keep taking pill but wear protection for seven days from the day you stop being ill.
