J = 10/16
I hope you didn't mistakenly close the parenthesis too early on the right hand side of the equation. Here are steps:
89 - 5J - 15 = -23 + 11J + 87
74 + 23 - 87 = 11J + 5J
10 = 16J
J = 10/16

89-5(J+3) = -23+11(J)+87
89+23-87 = 11(J) +5(J+3)
25 = 11J+5J+15
25 - 15 = 16J
10=16J
10/16=J
J = 5/8

89-5(j+3)= -23+11(j)+87
89-5j+15= -23+11(j)+87
+5j +5j
89-15= -23+16(j)+87
74= -23+16(j)+87
+23 +23
97=16(j)+87
-87 -87
10=16(j)
/16 /16

distrubute 5. 5times j equals 5j 5 times s equals 15
89-5j+15=-23+11j+87
add like terms
89-16j+15=-23+87
-89 -89
-16j+-106=-23+87
+106 +106
-16j =-129+87
-16j =+129 +129
-16j = 216
-16=216
/-16 /-16

well... its a very simple equation. you work a little bit harder to work it out instead of asking on here.
but still, now that you have asked let me explain some rules in mathematics.
i used to solve problems using a short form called BODMAS
which stands for :-
BO - brackett omission(which is done by either solving the equation in the bracket first and then opening the bracket or by multiplying or dividing the number outside by each term in the brackett and the omitting the bracket)
then ,
D for Division
M for multiplication
A for Addition
S for subtraction.
always solve any equation or a sub equation with this formula and you'll see that even toughest equations would be lot easier.
also, don try to get to the answer just by looking on the question. do step by step and you'll reach your destination yourself.
