I remember the story. The statue had gems for eyes and was befriended by the little bird. Winter was coming but the bird was reluctant to leave his friend. The statue requested that the bird remove his eyes (which were gems) and take them to those most in need. Then other valuables that the statue possessed for it was a poor village and many people were in want. The statue asked the bird to stay a bit longer to tell him what was happening since he no longer had sight. The bird stayed with his friend too long and froze to death. The statue's heart, which was made of lead, broke.
A beautiful little story of friends giving and giving until neither one could give anymore. I'm sorry, I can't remember the title nor the author. I read it in my junior high literature class and that was longer ago than I care to remember.

It's the Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde. I have it in a collection of his short stories but I've also seen it published as a children's illustrated hardback.

it's called 'the HAPPY prince' (by oscar wilde). There are a few of his short stories that are great ('the fisherman and his soul' is one): you should check them out too.
