The last I heard they were seeds from the cashew tree and had nothing to do with mushrooms, which give off spores. But then it has been a long time since I studied Biology. They may have made advances of which I am not aware.

Cashews are the seeds of a flowering tree. Although they are grouped with nuts for culinary purposes, they really are not nuts. (Technically, most of the things that were call nuts really aren't).
