It feels a bit like a shot and you have to stay very still while they are putting it in, even if you are having a contraction at that moment. It takes about a minute. After that, things feel wonderful.
I'm a wimp too and screamed that I didn't want things stuck in my back, but in hindsight, I'm glad they did!

I too am a wimp. My labor was induced which caused it to be extremely painful. I Chose to go for the epidural however was so scared that i made myself sick. It was a quick pinch and it was over, no pain during or after the epidural. I ended up having an emergency c-section and i can honestly say i felt nothing. I would have another epidural if i had to do it all again. My fear of the epidural was far worse then the epidural itself LOL. Good luck and dont worry!!

I didn't think that it hurt at all. The contractions hurt worse than the epidural did. I've also got 4 tattoos on my back so one little needle was no big deal. I'll admit though, I was kinda nervous about getting just because it's a normal reaction from pretty much anyone. Being stuck with a pointy object can be a little scary but it's over and done with in no time and you feel a whole lot better after it starts to work.

Hi, I never had a c-section, but did give birth vaginally with an epidural. The epidural itself did not hurt and it was the contractions that put me to tears. I am pregnant again and NOT looking forward to this. My back went crooked after I gave birth, it was like that for several days, but I would do it again. I can't say it made birth painless cause there was a ton of pain, however, I can't imagine if there was no epidural. Be more worried about after you have the baby, that's when you'll be in the most pain with your c-section, that's what my sister said, she had 3 kids, 2 c's and one vaginal.
Just get some pain meds after you give birth, I took them for 2 days, and still breastfed.

If it's a scheduled C-section, you'll likely get a spinal, not an epidural, which is great. (Better pain control, fewer weird side effects like shaking uncontrollably, etc.)
I've had two C-sections, one emergency and one scheduled, and the epidural/spinal didn't hurt at all either time.
I have to say, though, that if you're a wimp about pain, a C-section is going to be rough. The spinal/epidural, even if you did feel it, is NOTHING compared to the first few days after a surgical delivery.

It stings a bit, but i dont think i even cared. while they were trying to get the needle in I was contracting so hard I was crying from them and not the needle.
However, I have to say I would do it natural if i could... sucks im a wimp when it comes to pain.
I only say that because ever since I HAD the epidural with my first I cant do situps or crunches to save my life, the spot where I got the epi hurts when i do.

I had an epidural and yes...it hurts . Just for a few minutes ....when they put it in, while they are trying to make sure it is securely in your back.....and then....well I felt the trickle down my spine then my contractions got easier. I am a wimp as well. I hate needles.
BUT!!!!! thisis only in some cases..... I now have migrane headaches and back problems from my epidural. Not everyone has this problem...but research it.....google it.....ask your doctor .....talk to a lamas coach about it.

everyone is different really and it depends on your pain threshold. my epidural was extreemly painful when they attempted it and something didnt go right because i could still feel contractions. in the end i needed a general anesthetic for my emergency c-section.
i think you will be fine because if you are booked in the chances are you already wont be in labour and its really hard to sit still when you are having contractions and they are trying to put the epidural in.please dont be scared by what ive said tho - everyone is different and some people have had a great expereince with them. i just wanted to be honest and let you know - yes sometimes they can hurt :(
best of luck and congratualtions

In canada they ussually give you an epidural when you are in extreme labour pain, and that labour pain feels like either your back is about to blow off or your butt.
But you are having a c section so everything is planned and maybe they could sedate you before the needle goes in your back. I was in so much pain with my labour that the epidual needle didnt bother me at all. Once they give you the needle you will NOT feel anyhting. And if you do tell them so they can add more. Good luck!

The epidural DOES hurt but only for a couple of seconds. The doctor will walk you through everything and (hopefully) be a very calming presence. It doesn't take long for the medicine to take effect and then the only think to worry about is your nerves. :-) Best of Luck!!
