My parents bought uniform pants for my son. They fit around the waist, but the legs are too long. They mailed them to me, so I don't want to have to mail them back and have them return them and get another size if it's possible for me to just hem them myself. Is there an easy way to do this?

Yes. Have your son put the pants on inside-out. Have a good laugh. Turn the pants up to the right length, and pin with safety pins, not straight pins. Those fall out. Have him take the pants off. With them still turned inside-out, thread a needle with thread as close to the color of the pants as you can get. Use about 4 feet of thread. Slide the needle to the center, bring the two ends together and knot well. Make a big knot if you can. Anchor the knot in the side seam of the pants leg. Sew by dipping just the tip of your needle through the fabric. Be sure you go through both layers. Dip the tip of the needle through both layers and make a stitch about 1/8" long -- tiny. Bring the tip of the needle back up so that stitch slides down the needle.Go about 1/2" further along and do the same thing. Make about 6 or 8 of these tiny little stitches, sliding them onto the needle, then pull the needle through and pull the thread all the way taut. Repeat the process all the way around the pants leg. Once you get the hang of it, it goes really fast. By lining the stitches up on the needle, you sew straighter.

Email me (by clicking on my name under the grey smiley box over there) if you have questions. Iron-on hem tape is ok for emergencies, but you'll end up putting it back in several times.

Since these pants cost you no money and you have no experience in sewing, you should take them to a dry cleaner that does alterations and pay to have them hemmed. They are part of your son's uniform , and I'm sure you want him to have the proper appearance. You should learn to hem on some other pants. Boys grow fast and it's a skill you'll need.

The iron-on hem tape works really well - it will go through many washings before it starts to come out. Also, your local dry cleaning shops will hem the pants for a small fee.

You can buy some sewing tape called Magic Stitch that will hem the pants by using an iron. No sewing.

If you're not much good at sewing, then you can buy iron on tape to turn up hems. It works quite well, but isn't as long lasting as needle and thread. I don't know where you live, but if it's the UK, then you can buy the tape from any haberdashery shop, and most supermarkets and Woolworths sell it too. If my memory serves me correctly, it's called 'Vilene'.

Needle and thread take about 5 minutes, the iron-on hem tape might take 2 minutes but it sometimes comes undone in the wash.

I would use fusible webbing.. it looks like masking tape and it binds when ironed... you can get it at a fabric or craft store.

Its great for hemming, patching, and really any binding fabric needs.

You could also by no sew glue. Just be sure to crease the pants with an iron.
