I'm at a loss to grasp this one, I don't have the owners manual, can't find fuse blk diag. anywhere. I figure the only thing left is the fuse block itself or the headlight switch, right?

Since both tail lights are out, it's probably the wiring or a bad ground wire. If you think it's the fuses and you don't have a diagram, pull one out at a time and see if it's good or not. It might take an extra minute to check them all. If the fuse is blown, you have a short somewhere. Make sure you fix the short, do not put a higher rated fuse in there or you might be driving the charred remains of a 1980 F150.

I don't think so as the headlights come on... I don't have the diagram handy for a 1980, but a turn signal switch can cause same problems if it's just the brake lights, and a wiring issue if it's the running lamps.

Have had issues with the sockets themselves corroding on the inside and causing weird things on the rear.. no ground inside the socket can lose all brake and run lights in the back that way.

Not necessarily. You may have a broken wire underneath. Tail lights and head lights aren't always on the same fuse either. Check up under the dash where the brake pedal contacts the brake switch and make sure it works properly and the switch isn't stuck in. I'm willing to bet if you take a test light you will find you lost juice and have a broken wire somewhere.
