When considering opening a retail store what are some expenses that people tend to not think of? Other than rent, and bills for phone and the basics.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Specialty Shop Retailing: How to Run Your Own Store Revised by Carol L. Schroeder

That is exactly the point of a business plan. Check out your local library for books that will help you think of things that you may be overlooking. Many books offer sample plans.

Advertising! Some tend to think if you open it they will come, well they won't if they don't know where you are or what you have for sale.

Lots of hidden cost. Restock, employees,advertisment(sales,store,ect.),shelves,racks ect, sales taxes, even the bags and price tags can add up ..
