Borat is a character that was created by the Cambridge educated comedian Sacha Baron Cohen (showing how far Cambridge has slipped in the comedy league since Monty Python). He is a character from Kazakhstan who naively assumes that every culture will be similar to his own, which places him in embarassing situations at various social functions. He lists various odious attributes as being common in Kazakhstan and also pokes fun at various customs not dis-similar from some English ones . Borat originally featured on the Ali G Show about 5 years ago and, incredibly, Sacha Baron Cohen has not developed the act or any more characters in that 5 years, other than a puerile film aimed at breaking in the American market. People excuse Sacha Baron Cohen because they think Ali G is making an valid attack on old authority figures who try to 'get down' with the multicultural youth of today but the shap sword of satire was blunted years ago when people like Tony Benn refused to fall in to his trap.

In addition, I will say that humour works best when it is aimed at targets that arguably deserve it. How anyone can think the people of Kazakhstan deserve to be riduculed in this way would be a mystery to me if I wasn't aware of this cowardly fashion amongst some comedians trying to make a name for themselves. They give political correctness a good name (and I know how far 'liberals' take that sometimes.)

Absolutely. Sacha Baron Cohen has created two characters, both of whom had about half an hour's shelf life, and he's dragged them out for years.

He never was satirical - where is Chris Morris when you need him?

To rescue Cambridge's reputation, the Mitchell and Webb Look was ace!!

i think he is hilarious. i don't think he is making fun of people in Kazakhstan. We was watching him the other night and I had pains from laughing that much. You shouldn't take it too seriously, its just a laugh, you have to laugh.

We have decided we are not going to go watch it in the cinema because everyone will be looking at us, that's how creased up we were. We'll have to watch it about 10 times coz we'll miss lots because we'll be laughing so much.

HALF THE TROUBLE HERE NOW IS BECAUSE WE ARE ALL GOING OVER THE TOP WITH POLITICAL CORRECTNESS.

Tell you what, if he does your head in that much, I wouldn't bother wasting time thinking about it.

Life's to serious as it is without taking Borat seriously, let your hair down and have a LAUGH!!

"Smile, have a nice day, and stop worrying about Borat, ITS A JOKE!

Us Irish must be the most ridiculed nation in the world but generally we take the jokes made about us in good sport and im sure the people of Kazakstan will do the same.

I do agree that Borat is a one trick horse. It is a very different trick to Ali G (another one trick horse).
However I think Borat is, at least initially, a funny joke and will get a decent amount of laughs until the joke wears thin.
I do think it is racist and foolish to have made him from a real nation when instead a fake Soviet nation could have been devised especially for the character - Vjorskistan or similar.

Gosh - an "intellectual mistake", eh? Is that political correctness - or the Emperors' New Clothes? I'm sure you must be really clever, and read loads of books - can I hang around with you so we can show the poor retarded public what it's like to belong to the intellectual elite?

Borat is funny!

Lighten up. The world is way too PC these days.

I'm Welsh and I don't get upset about the Pot Noodle adverts or "Dafydd the only Gay in the village!"

Because they're FUNNY!

You don`t really get the " its only comedy" thing do you? Monty Python has one gag, and 200 shows, and was never funny. Oxford is for depressives. Cambridge has better tea rooms.

No... Borat is a man of the people and a national hero. The history you give is fake and I find it wrong that you should be able to publish such lies about him here....

Okay I didnt read you rant or anything.

But to answer the question. It was funny the first time. The first time.

To make into this huge character complete with a film and all kinds of merchandising is really desperate.

Its not funny anymore, its overdone and kinda stupid.

He's just desperate for publicity, and he's riding the wave.
