I have 3 children. I always set an amount in pounds not in presents.
If one has 6 presents that total £100 and another has 6 that total £200, that's unfair.
I try to teach them the value of things all year round anyway.
I think as children get older, the presents they would like often cost more, and they are old enough to understand this, and the fact their pile of presents may not be as big as someone else's.
My son is 12, and he has asked for a mobile phone, a memory card for the phone and an X box 360. I have told him that's all he will get and so I don't want him to be disappointed on Xmas morning when his sisters pile is bigger. He said "I'm not daft mum, I know how expensive they are, but really that's all I want."

If I were you, set a monetary amount, not a present amount.xxx

It depends on what you can afford and what importance you place on the holiday. My parents set an amount for me and my sister that they will spend and then sometimes we will have a lot of little presents and sometimes a few bigger ones.

3 is a good number; 2 to keep and one to give away
