Wedid not ever evolve from Monkeys or apes.
Whoever said that is an idiot of the first order.
Monkeys, apes and other primate species have been evolving alongside us for millions of years.
The theory is that we may share a common ancestor possibly back hundreds of millions of years where one set went off to become primates and another went of to become homo erectus.

Humans did not evolve from monkeys or apes at least not the ones you see today as they are already too far down the evolutionary road to evolve into anything else. However humans together with the other great apes had a common ancestor and they have all evolved from that ancestor in different ways due to the different circumstances in which the lived. The common ancestor of the apes and the common ancestor of the monkeys also had a common ancestor and so on back to the tiny mammals who lived in burrows and ate insects and thus managed to survive the disaster that wiped out the dinosaurs

Ok this question is rooted in a common misconception. Human evolution from lower mammals is often considered to be linear with each new species replacing the previous one and so on; this is not actually the case. Evolution more closely resembles a tree structure with new species branching out all the time.

What will have happened is the primates which were destined to become our ancestors will have moved away geographically from the rest of their species to an environment to which they were not perfectly suited, this would have put selection pressure on the species and caused and evolutionary change. The primates which did not move from their old location would have experienced no such selection pressure and as such would not have evolved. Hence you get two species, our ancestors and the primate's ancestors co-existing (in time if not in space) with neither species having to replace the other.

Oh, and I am sure you will get the usual religious nutters with their "No evolution" crap. Do try to ignore them, hopefully they will prove too stupid to continue living and will stroll under a bus or something...

what you have to understand is that we did not evolve from monkeys or apes, but we share a common ancestor with them, humans and chimpanzees were the same species around 5 million years ago, that species and gorillas were the same species 10 million years ago. You have to think of evolution like a tree, you have a trunk which splits into branches and branches which split into other branches. It is really only about 2 million years ago that the species we evolved from even started walking on two legs.

Humans are still here because we learned how to survive without having sex with apes. Monkeys and apes are stil here because we we all signed a peace treaty. Didn't you see The Planet of the Apes movie? I really don't think it's important enough to argue about. We are all still here...........for now. Maybe the apes and monkeys are the ones who will inherit the earth.

We did not evolve from monkeys/apes. Your point is well taken. We evolved from Unicorns because they no longer exist. Many who get involved in politics still have the pointy heads.

monkeys have only 97% of our DNA. We may be distant cousins 10000 times removed. But are you the same as your cousin? Is your neighbor the same as you? They are here because at a perverbial crossroads 100000 years ago, we went one way, and they another. Lions are a dominant cat, so why are house cats still around? Why are there different types of birds? The answer is the same. They evolved differently.

Because they didn't just stop evolving. They just branched off in a different direction.
