Using a putty knife and a hammer, gently tap the putty knife in the crack by the window frame. Repeat around all sides, including the bottom. Open the window. Do not bang on the window with a hammer. Besides breaking the glass, you could separate the track and could cause cold air to blow in around the window.

Carefully cut along the crack where the window opens with an exacto knife or razor blade. If you just bang the window open the piant will chip off and look horrible.
