I read an essay in college where the author talked about playing in the city dump ( in a small rural town in turn -of -the- century Canada) and describing what was in it and what it told about the people who left their refuse in it. We had to write an essay about what we leave behind tells about us and society.

I wonder what is in US landfills. ... Lots of disposable diapers I bet. We love children and convenience. Mounds of shredded paper - we want our privacy. Tons of fast food and junk food containers, not to mention uneaten food. We live life in the fast lane and have unhealthy and wasteful habits. I think there are lots of toys and gadgets, too. We toss them aside for the latest and greatest - some people recycle or pass them along, but we don't keep things until they wear out anymore - we are a materialistic society.
It would be interesting to know what really takes up the most space in America's trash cans.

Sure garbage tells a lot about society. Archeology wouldnt have too much to go on if they didnt have pottery shards and stuff. Imagine 2000 years from now all the car frame's and computers they are going to be rebuilding. :)

wouldn't it be funny if the ancient cave paintings were in fact from some kids just playing around with ancient paint?
