Depends on the application. A knife actualy cuts from the friction it creates. Friction in bearings causes them to wear out fast.

Without friction between your car's tires and the road, you can't accelerate, brake, or steer. Just try driving on smooth ice. Most of the energy used when driving straight at a constant speed is used to overcome friction between the vehicle and the air.

advantages=it stops your car(breaks)
disadvantages= causes heat

Friction is what gives you a foot hold. without that foot hold, nothing can be pushed.
