OK, my daughter is 4 months old, and like most other babies, she routinely spits up a small amount after eating. However, for the past few days, she's been spitting up large amounts of mostly undigested milk (she's breastfed), right after she burps. It's getting so that now when she spits up, it's time for a whole new outfit for her, a change of shirt for me, and a small mopping up off the floor/sofa! I've tried burping her more frequently but she still spits up just the same. What could be the problem? I plan on calling her pedi this week about it but I thought I'd gather any info you other parents may have in the meantime. Thx!

My daughter also spat up a lot. She frequently "slimed" entire outfits, both hers and mine. It never caused her any distress, she did not appear to be in pain, and she was nursing well and gaining weight well.

I asked my pediatrician about it, and he said that the muscles (sphincters) in the baby's digestive tract are immature and for some babies this can cause a lot of spitting up. He predicted that it would probably get better on its own around 6 months. In our case, his advice was completely correct. In the meantime, we just got LOTS of burp cloths and bibs and did a lot of laundry. Right around 6 months of age her spitting up went away almost entirely. The change was very sudden - I was surprised.

So I think for some babies a lot of spitting up can be pretty normal and not a sign of a problem other than being messy and inconvenient at times!

Are you eating anything different then you used to? You daughter might have an allergy to something you are eating. You may want to cut out the dairy products for a couple of weeks(with your doctor's ok first) and see what happens.

Burp her before you feed her. burp her between breasts etc.

Think about whether or not you have changed or added something to your diet.

She also might be getting too much to eat . She is most likely sleeping longer stretches. And your breasts maybe fill up more.

Besides checking your doctor. You can check with La Leche Leauge in your area.

Best thing to do is bring it up at the next doctors appointment and it might be as simple as a formula change.

Similac or Start Right formulas

Both of my boys did the same thing, but at an earlier age. They were diagnosed with really bad reflux(GERD) and eventually put on Zantac.

Could be reflux or it could be a food allergy. I would start by eliminating cow's milk (and everything that contains cow's milk) from your diet. And call the ped.

Our sons did this the doctor gave them medicine for heartburn (zantec) and it worked wonders. Also try keeping her upright for awhile after eating.

It sounds like she may have reflux. My dd does and prescription infant zantac has fixed it. http://www.infantreflux.org/user_signs_symptoms.htm I hope this helps.

Could she be one of those lactose-intolerant people who cannot bear regular milk?
