After the assassination Austria issued an ultimatum to the Hungarian part of Austria Hungary that was undoable. The Germans were behind the Austrians all the way. The Russians, seeing slavic people being oppressed mobilized their army. This resulted in German and Austrian mobilization. The Triple Entente went into effect and voila! the Great War.
