It is a 5 hp engine, sounds like it is going to turn over but never starts. Last time it started it ran and then suddenly stopped.. Hasn't ran since then. Any ideas would be greatly appritiated.. It is also only a 2 old engine.

Did you check for spark,if spark is OK is there to much gas on the plug and area,if so turn off switch to battery and pull or try to turn over engine at least ten times to blow out extra gas with plug out.Aften cleaning plug ,replace it and try starting it.You may need to do this several times.

First make sure the enging can turn over, meaning if you pull the rope or turn the key, you can see and hear the engine turn over. If you can't do this, then your engine is pretty much finished.

But if you can turn it over you need to make sure you're getting a spark from the sparkplug and fuel into the engine. Check for spark by removing the wire from the spark plug and hold it close (not touching) to a bolt or other metal object on the engine. If you allow the wire to touch, you can't see the spark. Just make sure you're not touching the metal area on the wire, then pull the starter rope like you were trying to start the engine (you may need another person to help). You should see a fat blue spark. If you don't see the spark or it doesn't appear to be a large blue/white spark, you may not have pulled the rope fast enough or something is wrong with your ignition system.

If that all checks out ok, re-install the sparkplug wire. Then make sure you have fresh gasoline in the gas tank. Old gasoline (about a year or older) looses its "kick" and will turn to varnish and gum up your carburator which will not let the engine run or cause it to run poorly and will require you to disassemble the carburator and clean it. Check and see that your air filter is clean. Make sure that the choke on the engine is turned on and that you prime the carburator by pressing a rubber bulb several times. Try starting the engine. If this doesn't work, remove the air filter and CAREFULLY spray a second or two worth of starting fluid into the carburator. Try starting the engine. If it starts, put the air filter back on and enjoy. If it doesn't, you may want to look at cleaning the carburator.

Install a NEW plug, fresh gasoline and make sure the air filter is CLEAN! They won't start with a clogged air filter. If that doesn't do the trick then you need to have the small engine mechanic take a look because it might be internal ignition problems.
Whatever you do DO NOT spray ether in the engine! I hate when some idiot tells people to use ether! It will do more damage than good and if a motor whether gasoline or diesel is properly tuned and up to specs, it will run without adding ether. If you need ether than you have a problem! I wish they would stop selling it and in my shop I will fire a mechanic on the spot if I even see it in the shop let alone be using it!

We talkin 4 stroke or 2 stroke ?? No carb on 2. I presume you have compressiom ??
Take out spark plug, makes it easier to crank. Connect plug wire, place plug on engine so it is grounded and so you can see the electrode. Crank the engine and look for spark. If no spark ignition parts are usually in flywheel. Need to pull flywheel to access them.

substitute the spark plug (make valuable that's gapped), spray beginning fluid in carb and make small transformations to gasoline/air ratio. don't have choke on finished boar once you attempt starter fluid.
