Most of the fighting in World War I, also known as the Great War, took place in Europe on the western front. It pitted the Allies - France, Russia, and the United Kingdom - against the Central Powers - Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. The trenches of the western front stretched from the North Sea to the border of Switzerland.

These countries were at war from 1914-18; the United States did not enter the conflict until 1917.
