I really had to brush up to answer this question, since this is branching out from my regular specialities. I think that roots make their own canals as they push through the soil. No difference for gum trees. The canal should only be too wet if the rain has been excessive. I say this all tongue in cheek. I will leaf it up to you to decide the truth. The eucaliptus will thrive in such an environment. Just stay away from the dentist - he maple it out.
