Owned a dishwasher all my life. I only use the covered cup that opens about mid-cycle. My dishes are just as clean as they would be filling the prewash cup to. Again the manufacture of the detergent wants you to use more soap so they can sell you more.

Just one is fine usually. Most dishwashers have a cup that has a cover and one that doesn't. The one that has a cover should always be used, the one without should only be used if you have an extra large load or extra dirty dishes, because it's for the pre-wash cycle. If you just use the one with a cover, you can advance the dial past the pre-wash cycle, also.

Just one should do it, unless you have a reason to use the extra-long cycle.

The secret is good HOT water. You can even use less than one side.
