I think to a certain extent, we shop like crazy because we are allowed and almost expected to do so at that time of year. For one thing, it is simply *easier*...the shops are open much later, for example.

I think for large sectors of society, Christmas becomes a time to have a guilt-free shopping spree...after all, you're shopping for others and not for yourself, and this is a positive feeling. It feels good to find a thoughtful gift for someone. I think that's one of the biggest reasons for our crazy shopping habits in the lead-up to Christmas.

guilt and ego
I love xmas
but dont need to try and outdo others in that my presents are better
better to contact people during the year
