Alcohol, as a depressant, impairs higher brain functions, including better judgment.

Marijuana, as a euphoriant, makes one relaxed and drops one's guard.

Both offer in-roads to what is otherwise off-limit areas of the human psyche

cannabinoids receptors are mostly concentrated in the Basal Ganglia, Hippocampus and Cerebellum. The hippocampus is located within the temporal lobe and is important for short-term memory. When the THC binds with the cannabinoid receptors inside the hippocampus, it interferes with the recollection of recent events but does not affect long term memory. It therefore makes learning at time of influence extremely difficult. A person under the influence of marijuana is usually unable to follow a normal conversation as he easily forgets what has just been said. Despite this, the person may become highly talkative yet his words do not make much sense.
THC also affects coordination, which is controlled by the cerebellum and the hippocampus. A person under the influence is unable to perform tasks which require an extent of coordination such as driving a car, running or dancing similar to an intoxicated person. The basal ganglia control unconscious muscle movements, which is another reason why motor coordination is impaired when under the influence of marijuana.
It alters perception of stimuli including light, noise, space and hunger. After some minutes of THC contact with the brain, the user experiences a dry mouth and a sense of hunger known as munchies. Italian research published in the journal entitled ‘Nature’ in April 2001, states that endocannabinoids in the hypothalamus releases hormones which activate cannabinoid receptors that are responsible for maintaining food intake and this is what causes the false perception of hunger.
