Oh, c'mon, Doc and Festus were just pals. A girl has to have someone to talk to when her man is the tall, strong and silent type. Marshall Dillon wasn't exactly chatty.

Nowadays, if we have a tall, strong and silent type as a boyfriend, we women can have gay friends to chat with but nobody was "out" in those Wild West days.
