Sometimes Michael's Crafts carries common minerals like pyrite for craft projects. I seem to recall that the Discovery Store had pyrite as well as do many other educational shops.

Here's a list of rock and mineral shops, which I have never been to and can't be sure even still exist: http://www.osomin.com/shopsgm.htm

If you want to buy in bulk it's best to order online because a lot of places will give discounts to schools and teachers. If you want to give them an extra "wow" you can buy actual pieces of gold in nugget or bullion form for around $20 for them to compare to the pyrite. eBay is an easy place to get it but some dealers will have cheap crystalline gold. Also, kids love geodes.

I would contact a Geologist in your area and check out if there is a place you can get it yourself for free first. Most 'science' oriented shops carry pyrite samples but honestly you can't guarentee it is that when you buy it. I'd recommend finding out where there might be some in your area. It's pretty common so it'll probably save you money even though pyrite isn't expensive.
