Let x=the number of adult tickets sold, and y=the number of student tickets sold.

x+y=420 and 5x+3y=1700
If we take y=420-x, we can plug it into the second equation, giving us:
5x+3(420-x)=1700
5x+1260-3x=1700
2x=440
x=220
So there were 220 adult tickets sold. (This also makes 420-220, or 200 student tickets sold.)

This can also be done using only one variable.
x=adult tickets sold
420-x=student tickets sold
5x+3(420-x)=1700
5x+1260-3x=1700
2x=440
x=220

Call X number of student tickets
call 420-X number of adult tickets

3X + 5(420-X) = 1700
3X + 2100-5X = 1700
-2X + 2100 = 1700
2100 - 1700 = 2X
400= 2X
X = 200 = number of student tickets

420-X = 420 - 200 = 220 = number of adult tickets

Gosh I type slow. In the time it took me to type this 3 people supplied the correct answer.

3x + 5(420-x) = 1700
3x + 2100 - 5x = 1700
-2x = -400
x= 200 ($3 tickets)
420-x = 220 ($5 tickets)

3x + 5y = 1700
x + y = 420
x=420 - y
3(420-y) + 5y = 1700
1260 -3y + 5y = 1700
1260 + 2y = 1700
2y = 440
y = 220
x = 200
Does it work?

220 at $5 is $1100
200 at $3 is $600
$1700

x + y = 420
3x + 5y = 1700

Multiply top by -3

-3x - 3y = -1260
3x + 5y = 1700

2y = 440
y = 220

x + y = 420
x + 220 = 420
x = 200

200 student tickets
220 adult tickets

let total no of adult tickets be X
and total no of student tickets be Y
now make two equations
1. - X+Y=420
2.- 5X+3Y=1700

solve the above equations to get the answer as

adult tickets- 220
student tickets-200
