One answer was very true -- Caterpillar, Inc.
Other companies are mostly factory-type corporations -- Alcoa, Wabash National, Fairfield, Subaru, Eli Lilly pharmaceuticals, and Landis+Gyr. Most of these are in the city itself, and some -- like the Subaru production company -- are in the surrounding area.
However, the highest percentage of employment in Lafayette is Purdue University.
