Where do you live? In response to the person about "if it's black leave it alone," just because it's black isn't enough info. If you're in the U.S., it's probably an Indigo snake. They're harmless to humans, make good pets, but are now on the endangered species list.
If you're in Australia, then it probably is poisonous.

you probably also have rats and mice, it eats the stuff. So I think if you are to have an animal, it would be the snake, you don't want the other rodents. a snake will eat more than one rodent.

more info would be good, but i wouldnt' worry unless it's poisonous. up to you to find out if it's poisonous or not.
i've had snakes as pets, they make great pets! i used to take one to high school with me in my vest pocket - his name was junior and he was a hog-nosed snake. i lived in GA then
