Be very careful who you choose as a friend. It seems like this is one you need to cut loose.
When others learn the truth about her they might assume you are just as much a liar as your friend.

My personal choice is that a habitual liar is not someone I can afford to call friends.
So if I were in your shoes I would probably tell her that if she doesn't start telling the truth all the time that your friendship will have to end. Because your reputation is on the line by your association with a known liar, and there is nothing to stop her from be-smirching your reputation if she ever gets upset in the mean time.
How to know someone is lying? difficult, but in general liars will not look you directly in the eyes while they are lying, and if they can pull that off you will often feel a sort of internal "yuck"/twitch inside yourself that says "hey, not true".

I used to have a best friend like that. She would always say how many people were obsessed with her. She lost all her friends eventually when they found out what type of person she was. She lost me too for a lot of other stuff.

If she is telling lies that hurt you then distance yourself from her. If she is telling lies just to be more popular then she has a low self-esteem problem and needs help.

you cant most of the time but what you can do is ask her to introduce you to all of her boy friends and tell her you want as exciting life as her and ask her how to be so cool that will scare the crap out of her

Look for contradictions...two different versions of the same thing given by the same person's account is the giveaway.

There is no reliable way to determine if someone is lying - not even a polygraph test.
Get a new friend. One that doesn't lie.

besides hooking them up to one of those lie detecting machines, you just have to look them in the eye and say, "look i don't care if you don't have boys following you around or calling, i want to friends with you, not someone else"
