Practice makes perfect! You can buy, or at least you used to be able to buy, typing books for practice. These will teach you proper hand positions, which fingers are used for which letters, and such. You can try simple exercises to learn where all of the letters are without having to look at your hands. This is the main deal with learning to be a great typer. So start out with that goal in mind, don't worry about speed, that will come later.
Try just typing out aaa bbb ddd eee and so on. This will get you used to the position of the letters. It seems boring, I know, but it gets better. After you've completely mastered that (don't have to look at your hands, make no mistakes) you can move onto simple sentences that use similar letters, such as "see sally slip away" or something like that. Then you'll move onto other, more involved sentences.
But I would really suggest looking for a book, at a bookstore or in the library. And just practice, practice, practice. You'll get frustrated, fed up and think that "two fingered pecking" is easier. Just keep with it, and you'll be a pro in no time! Good luck with it!

If you have the attention span and budget or downloading skills for programs, I assume those would be the best, but honestly I type very very quickly and haven't ever used one. After I learned the basics, (yay lame typeing class in highschool) I didn't get really good until I was trapped at home for a few months with nothing but the computer for social contact. I found myself in chat rooms. You want to up your skills? You don't even notice how fast you get going when you're doing it conversationally. Just find some benign place to type at people for a couple of hours a week (or however much you're inclined to do) and voila! You will be a typing speed demon for free in no time.

You might first want to consider a spelling, punctuation, grammar session first.
typeing = typing
sesson = session
