The Chrysalids depicts a rural community in Newfoundland, several centuries after some nuclear war, with a religious obsession about eliminating those born with any genetic abnormalities. It follows a small group of cousins who realise their telepathic abilities have to be hidden, and their troubles when these are discovered. The novel was adapted as a BBC Radio 4 play in the early 1980s.

I agree with oldhippypaul. The Crysalids came instantly to mind when I read the question. I loved that book when I read it in English class and I still sometimes re-read it.

If you're looking for the name because you liked the book, a similar book (but written for younger readers) is H.M. Hoover's "The Children of Morrow".

It could have been the 'Chrysalids'. If you can't find it in book form if was finally developed in to a film called 'The Fly' watch that, it my confirm that its the one you want.
