yes, galleries if they are close to you, and books in the library...start maybe with the general art history books, or books on XX century. There you can find what was on the peek in '50s, and it will give you idea, who and where to serach alter.
And I gues internet can be a good source sometimes..but sometimes it is shalow as well.
