this is my theory...
When priests (older ones) decided to enter the seminary, they were probably gay to begin with. Back in the day when being gay was the worst thing ever, they were probably ashamed and decided to "do the right thing". With all the repressed emotion, their wiring probably got screwed up and when they couldn't handle it anymore they started molesting the young boys.
I also think that celibacy is extremely unnatural. After all, we are only human. Masking and ignoring you natural human hormonal driven emotion will drive a crazy person sane.
By no means am I condoning the behavior. I think it's nauseating. This is just my theory as to why it has occurred so often the religious community.

The main problem is that priests have to be celibate. Most men have a very strong sex drive and it is not easy to ignore that. The Catholic church only allows altar *boys*, not girls, so the boys are more available, and of course they are (were) taught to respect the priests and basically that priests could do no wrong.
Contrary to popular belief, priests have not always been celibate. During several periods, especially early in the Church's history, priests were allowed to marry and raise families. If the Catholic church really wants to solve this problem, or at least minimize it, they should allow priests to marry.

Why does everyone think that all Priests are child molestors. A couple of priests got caught and everyone assumes that all children have been touched by a priest.
I'm Catholic and I was never molested, nor was anyone else I know. You are too paranoid if you are glad you didn't raise your kids Catholic because you are afraid they might be molested.

I don't think the problem is confined to the catholic clergy - by any stretch of the imagination. Were I a parent right now, I'd be very leery all of the time - for a son or a daughter.

its a vicious cycle, these priest were probably molested as kids. and now they are in turn doing it back. or maybe in priest school its a basic elective class. molesting 101. or maybe they are gay and if they can't have sex with women and there isn't anything about having sex with boys or men.

Being a Clergy person does not make you a saint. There are many people that take advantage of their positions to use others for their own selfish desires.

Until they give the proper punishment and screen people better before they enter the priesthood then there will always be a danger of that happening.
