Career (and life) advice?

Question

I've just decided that its time to move on from my job. However, I'm also planning to get pregnant in the next few months. I have a renal condition, and happen to know that my insurance coverage will cover me for everything I will need during my pregnancy, and even a transplant after that will be necessary. I'm afraid if I start job hunting now, I will A) not have as good insurance, and B) not be able to get pregnant until I've settled into the new company. What should I do???

This is one of the tougher life decisions. How important is your career to your family. A person I really respect once told me this story:

Life is three circles.
The first circle is what you do. your career
The second circle is where you do it. your choice of lifestyle and location
The third circle is who you are with doing it. In this case, your spouse.

So, which is most important to you? What's your 'circle'?

If it is your career, then you need to put other things on hold while you work through that. Otherwise you're going to find that you ultiamtely resent your decision... not a good thing.

If it is your lifestyle or location, then you need to make sure that the lifestyle you have chosen won't be impacted by the decisions your making. I don't think this is as relevant given your question.

If it is the "who", then does having a baby at this point in your lives together the thing that makes sense? Is it something you both are desiring right now and know its a journey you want to take together? Then don't sweat it. Keep the job, keep the insurance, get pregnant, have a baby, take maternity leave, get past post partem depression, and THEN reassess. If having good insurances makes your "circle 3" life work, then keep the job and don't worry as much about your career.

It's not a hard decision.... it's just a BIG decision. Take a deep breath. Think about which circle you are in. Talk it over with your spouse, make a decision and don't look back (looking back is the biggest mistake we make in our lives ;-) ).

If you are thinking of conceiving and giving birth to a baby, and do not have a lot of money save up for the purpose, you should try to stay at your current job provided that your current health insurance policy covers pregnancy. Child birth at a hospital is a minimum of a few thousand dollars if you don't have health insurance.

If you quit your current job and become pregnant before the next job, the new insurance company can turn down your coverage for renal condition and maybe even the pregnancy due to "pre-existing conditions".

One of the significant financial advantage of having children is the income tax reduction. If you are out of work for a while, you wouldn't be able to take advantage of numerous child related tax credits and deductions.

My suggestion is to do one thing at a time - baby or job.

Are you wanting real answer?
Are you paying your own personal insurance (not job related)?
Candidly most jobs with insurance will not cover you for the pregnancy during the first six months. it is legal.
A pre existing condition may not be covered.
You need a 2nd and 3rd job to amass money and pay off bills debt credit cards etc..
When you have money and are at the job and are less in debt then think about baby making with your legal spouse.

Well if you have good insurance right now I would just wait, because if you switch jobs it will be about 90 days till you get insurance at some companies, I would just wait it out. Have your baby while you still got insurance and boom you will be fine, then later on you can go find another job if you wish.
