Good question. In today's mainstream society the soul is often looked upon as that which remains when the body ceases to possess life. Most who study metaphysics look at the soul as an interplay of the energies between matter and spirit, thus a doorway to the spirit. There is a tendency to overuse words like soul, ego, mind and the definitions become muddled in the process. IMO the use or misuse of soul for spirit is at least a step towards acknowledging what exists beyond our physical sight. As humanity comes to a clearer understanding of the soul it will be led to garner wisdom as to spirit also.

Because they both deal in a religious point of view and differential that is largely meaingless for most people. It hasn't been since the eighteenth century (1700's) that the difference held value for philosophers of the time.
Most modern day philosophers don't even bother with metaphysics of this nature (as Nichze said "God is dead"). Today questions of right, wrong, and the thinking behind such distinctions are more important.
