True, but at the same point the government should do a little more to make peoples lives better instead of their own, their interest groups and investors.
Personally I am now involved in politics at the grass root level. But its hard. Most people think that unless they support the status quo there votes are wasted.

cosmiccastaway makes an excellent point about the attitude that people have toward making changes. They have become accustomed to power passing from one group of haves to the other. Real change will not come on a local or national level through the Democrats or the Republicans because they are the same people. If you do not believe that use the web to look at where their campaign money comes from. The candidates promise to give people more benefits so their vote is bought for another round.

For the past 3 years, I have been working on getting the HUD, State holds the contract to take care of the 60 unit Low Income for Seniors and Persons with Disability. Started with HUD, then to the States Housing and Community Development. Got no where.
We are dealing with bad inside wiring and plumbing. During this period of time I have been Harassed, Verbally Abused, and Verbally Threatened, just because I want health and safety to be taken care of. What I have learned from all this, government agencies that are supposed to help us, are in the graft and corruption game as well, all the way to the state government. You have to be courageous and persistent in trying to get help.
Because, you will run into so many roadblocks along the way.
Economics also plays a huge part. The cost of living has increased in leaps and bounds, while minimum wage has not been increased. People on Social Security cannot afford to provide for themselves. It's a real mess. I cannot afford an attorney, and legal aid has done all they can considering all
the cut backs in services. Of course the Administrators of their funding are living high on the hog, so the $ is not getting to the people who really need it. I will be 59 in a few days, and this has been going on for over 60 that I'm personally aware of. It's going to take a whole lot of people to remind the government that they work for us, not the other way around, because it's our money that provides them with their "wants", while ignoring the basic needs for survival to the people they are supposed to help. Remember, they are public servants.
Hope this helps, and yes, it's up to "we the people" to change things.
Best of luck!

The government starts the problems. Did I want to go to Iraq? No. Did I want to have such an enormous deficit which will no doubt affect our children and grandchildren? No. What do I do to change things for the better? I still go to work at 74 to be able to pay the doctor. I stopped griping about the medical situation a long time ago because it is not going to get any better.

You are totally right, people think that they dont have the power to change the way larger society works, but if you start with yourself, it can affect your family, which might affect where you work, and it may just spread. we are all only one person, but we are able to make changes. Sometimes it is really frustrating looking at the way things are, no matter what your view it, and not complaining about it is hard, but people need to see that instead of just complaining they can do something.

I see it differently. I think the government oversteps its bounds in interfering with what the people want. Example: gambling being illegal in some places, why should the govt. tell me how to spend my money, if I want to blow my entire paycheck gambling, thats my business not the govts. The government makes and passes laws whether we want them or not. These issues should be put up to the voters to decide, not what the politicians thinks is best for us. Majority rules in everything but yet we have no say so.
